How to coach young people to have health generating behaviours

Session Summary:

Coaching is not therapy, although like me a coach might have experience in psychotherapy or psychology, but the practice is not the same as therapy.

Coaching can be a pro-active, positive partnership with young adults that guides them to move forward. Indeed coaching for pre-teens, teenagers and young adults is not a new thing.

What kind of difficulties can a young person have?

The young person can present with a number of difficulties, some of which are described below.

  • Emotional problems
  • Sexual problems
  • Behaviour problems
  • School problems
  • Eating problems
  • Drugs, solvents and alcohol

The teenage years can be an emotional assault course for all concerned. A gulf can grow between parents and their children during adolescence. One of the reasons many of us find it so hard is because it is a time of rapid physical development and deep emotional changes. These are exciting, but can also be confusing and uncomfortable for child and parent alike.

Prior to being a coach for adults and young adults I have been a teacher for 15 years both in Switzerland and in the UK.
